In my abstract paintings I seek to share my fascination with the transitory aspects of nature. Giving up control is an essential part of my process. I often begin a painting with one planned element: a color pallet, a rough composition, and I rarely reference a photograph. I paint with dirty brushes to challenge myself to react to the colors that appear on the canvas. In my oil paintings I seek to capture the motion of the natural world. Feeling surprised by my brushstrokes invigorates me and mimics the chaos of the ecosystem. I emulate sensations of rippling seas, bird’s wings, and light streaming between trees. I let go of representation to tell stories. I strive to create an oasis in each painting for viewers to escape into the work.
I grew up in a creative household constantly making and surrounded by art. My exploration of nature influenced my artwork from a young age. It wasn't until June of 2014 when I discovered my love of paint by taking an intensive summer course at the California College of the Arts in Oakland. Soon after that course, I transitioned from acrylic to oil paints. I've been painting in oils ever since. I am currently in graduate school at Ohio University working towards a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. Painting is an essential facet of my life.
